Haegeles' Ireland 2022
Life is like a puzzle.
The more you travel,
The more you understand.
Then the more you understand,
The better the pieces fit together.

OUR WOW DAY...
sláinte
Sláinte to Edie!
In this photo, Edie has just been certified to make a proper Irish Coffee. (She is so cute here in her new Aran Island wool sweater.)
Edie and her husband Wayne are from Colorado so that sweater will get some good winter use. This is their 6th Rick Steves tour and when asked which was their favorite, Wayne replied, "The next one." Great answer, Wayne!
HOW TO MAKE A PROPER IRISH COFFEE
Prepare the coffee to your liking.
Use a blended whiskey (ie. not an expensive one.)
Whip some cream ever so lightly.
In a mug
-
1 shot whiskey
-
2 cubes cane sugar
-
Add coffee and stir
-
Hold a spoon over the top of the cup and slowly pour the cream into it allowing it to pour over the sides. Stop when it reaches the brim. Do not stir.
Enjoy the cool cream and the warm coffee in each sip.
The technique for pouring the cream
We slept one night at Clew Bay Hotel on James St. ideally based in the center of tidy Westport.

Get Your Irish On
TIDY UP YOUR TOWN LIKE A LOCAL
In an effort to win the hearts of tourists, Tidy Towns was created by Fáilte Ireland in 1958. It has caught on nationwide and helps make a locale a better place for residents and tourists alike. Tidy Towns is an annual environmental initiative that creates a friendly rivalry between localities as they compete to be recognized as the most attractive town, village or city in the Republic of Ireland. Towns are encouraged to keep buildings maintained, attractive and keep trash cleaned up.
Of the places we visited, these were winners:
Kenmare, 2000 Overall Winner; 2003, 2013 Small Town Winner
Westport, 2001, 2006, 2008 Overall Winner
Westport, 2003-4, 2009, 2012, 2014-15, 2017-19 Large Town Winner
Wow, Westport takes TIDY TOWNS seriously,
and it shows!
