Songs are sung, stories are shared and memories are made in DUBLIN

something fun

Mark found this fun song while getting psyched for our trip (...and he spent a lot of time getting psyched.)  It's about a tourist in Dublin in the pubs...but don't be this tourist!

The chorus...

"I'd walk your wild Atlantic shores
If I ever made it out the door
That emerald isle so lush and green
The greatest place I've never seen
Greatest place I've never seen"

GETTING TO THE HOTEL...

Take the stress off of arrival and print this!

  • From the Dublin airport we chose Aircoach 700, Leopardstown Route,  €8 purchased online. Do not use the app to purchase.  You cannot buy for multiple people with the app. Use their website instead.

  • Terminal 1: Exit T1, turn left immediately and you'll see the Aircoach stop.

  • Terminal 2: Exit the baggage area, stay on the same level. Follow the signs for buses and coaches. Cross the footbridge, take the right escalator and exit to the left. During peak hours, you should find an Aircoach customer representative present.

  • Our hotel, Buswells, was near the 4th stop Kildare St/Leinster House, the stop after O'Connell St Bridge.  It is a short walk to Buswells.  Exit the bus and turn left, walk to the traffic light, cross the street to 23 Molesworth St, the 3rd building on the left.

A DAY ON OUR OWN TIL WE MEET OUR GROUP...

sláinte

Slainte Pascal, a wealth of knowledge and guide extrordinairre.

But we didn't know that yet. 😄

When not on a tour, Pascal lives in Monaghan in County Ulster, with his wife and 3 children. He started as a driver in 2010 with his family's bus company and in 2015 began leading tours for RS.  He has the knack for storytelling through which he shares a wealth of information.  He also loves to give you a "wee chuckle."

Pascal is very attentive to details, is aware of your surroundings at all times, and keeps your tour running efficiently.

ABOUT THE RICK STEVES' BUDDY SYSTEM

It's genius!  Before you go anywhere on a Rick Steves' Tour, you do a buddy check.  You and your buddy (whom you were paired with at the initial meeting) confirm each other's presence with the guide before heading out.  This saves valuable time over a lengthy roll call.  So you can

crack on | get going sooner.

  • We slept three warm nights in Dublin at Buswells Hotel on Molesworth St. (There was a heat wave.)

We enjoyed talking with William the night porter here.

William is comically Irish, complete with the twinkle in his eye.

We mentioned going to N. Dublin and he said,

"Those are cowboys over there. Keep your heads down."

Upon clarification, N. Dublin is a bit gritty.

Get Your Irish On

DRINKING LIKE A LOCAL

sláinte!  |  cheers!

pronounced slan-cha

Pssst...The drinking age in Ireland is 18.

The Rounds Culture: In Ireland when drinking in a group, rounds are often bought by each member of a group. The first person to the bar is responsible to start rounds.  If someone has bought you a round, you must return the favor.  Your turn to buy the round is referred to as your "shout." However, there is no obligation to participate in rounds, simply decline the first one.

Pubs: There’s no hostess waiting to seat you. Just grab a seat if you can find one - but first ask if it is available. You’ll have to go to the bar to order your drink unless food is being served and you see a server. At the bar you will be expected to pay when you receive your order as tabs are not common in Ireland.

Becky took the list below to the pubs to have non-beer ideas.  She decided that Bulmer's Irish Cider is always a good idea. But she tried, and liked, Guinness and Smithwick’s.  That's pretty good for someone who generally doesn't like beer. 😮

  • Definitely beer.  And definitely Guinness Draught  (aka The Black Stuff) or a Murphy’s Stout.

  • Black and Black.  If you need something less bitter try the Black and Black.  It's Guinness with a shot of black currant.  Or try a Smithwick’s Red Ale (pronounced Smit-icks).

  • Whiskey and Cranberry.  Easy to drink.

  • Bulmers Irish Cider. Hard apple cider.  (Outside of Ireland it is called Magners)

  • Ginger and Lime. Ginger ale, lime, whiskey.

  • Gin and Tonic. Gunpowder, Dingle and Glendalough

  • Blackcurrant and Water. Non-alcoholic.

  • But under no circumstance should you order a Black and Tan. 🤭 The drink is called a half and half because in Ireland the term "black and tan" is considered to be offensive.

We loved this tip from Rick Steves on the website:

"Drink the local stuff with local people in local bars."

Great advice!

A TRAVEL TIP: Ask the bar tender for a suggestion of a good local beer, gin, or whiskey. 🍺 🥃 🍸 🍻 🧉
