WHY
RICK
STEVES?

We are Mark and Becky and we live in beautiful Pennsylvania.

This is our 3rd Rick Steves' tour. (There would have been more had Covid not interfered.) We have LOVED Rick Steves' tours and plan to do one each year until we can no longer keep up!

Which brings us to the fact that it is impossible to gain weight with Rick Steves. Really. The tours are active enough to burn off all those calories and then some! But that isn't why we chose Rick Steves.

The coach has WIFI and plenty of room for spreading out. Woo-hoo. The drivers are a delight in themselves and they take all the stress (and the "Honey, we really should ask someone") moments from navigating yourself through a foreign country, especially one that drives on the wrong side of the road. Coach time involves interesting commentary on local customs, language, music or history. But that isn't why we chose Rick Steves.

The tour guides are not just random hires, many are actually referred to Rick by other RS guides or Rick finds them himself.  Our guides to date have been FUN, yes very fun, because laughter makes for a relaxing time. They are also knowledgable, professional and helpful in times of need. Our guides have been well received by the locals and have given us seamless travel. And that gives you an added benefit all around. Because if the locals like the guide, the locals like you too. But that isn't why we chose Rick Steves.

Our tours have had a good balance between guided walking tours, local activities, scenic beauty, and more formal tours with a good amount of mixed in free time. When you arrive at a location you are ready to roll right to the front of the line, STRESS FREE. When possible, your guide gets you there before the crowds.  It is worth getting up just a wee bit earlier allowing the guide to set you up for immediate success. All the preliminaries have been taken care of with no sweat on your part, like those frustrating times when you can't get a signal on your phone for a reservation. But that isn’t why we chose Rick Steves.

The conveniently located inns, small hotels, bed and breakfasts you stay in are locally owned and operated by passionate hosts. Hotels are very nice, clean and often quaint.  A hearty breakfast is included every day. But that isn’t why we chose Rick Steves.

Dinners...wow.  Half your dinners are included in your trip.  We have often been introduced to something new or unexpected to love.  And there is no scrimping where quality or quantity is concerned.  You earned that meal now enjoy every bite! But that isn’t why we chose Rick Steves.

If you combine all of the above you create an experience. It isn’t just a vacation, or just a tour, it’s an authentic travel experience in the people, history, culture and beauty of the destination. Real local people for a real local experience for a great price.  And that’s why we chose Rick Steves and why you should too.

THIS
IS
US

Becky, a former teacher turned portrait photographer, enjoys hiking, cycling, traveling and photography. She's the plan-for-all-circumstances gal and has an hour by hour spreadsheet for every trip.

Becky's DNA says she is 4% Irish.  Does that even count for anything on this trip?

Mark, a former engineer turned data analyst, enjoys hiking, cycling, traveling and making wine. He's the guy that thinks Becky should have her travel spread sheet memorized, but on a RS Tour, she's off the hook and can relax.

Mark isn't Irish at all. But he is 27% Scottish.  That explains the red hair.

Why not Ireland? The real reason we chose Ireland this year is when we went to the RS site in 2021 to pick our 2022 tour, holy cow!, they were almost all booked already. Cue: SHEER PANIC! But on investigation we found Ireland had a few openings and whew, we got in. We also wait listed for an earlier Ireland tour due to a conflict with a wedding date and we were able to change tour dates too. Things are looking good now!

WHY
IRELAND?

Before our trip we watched these informative (and inspirational) videos from Rick Steves.

KNOW
IRISH
HISTORY

Understanding important dates in Irish history is key to understanding Ireland's story. We were pretty confused initially even though we had done some prep beforehand.  To help get things straight in our heads, Becky prepared a document and it's just a click away!

Click here for the page with dates and events that help put Irish heritage in perspective. It will open in a new window so you can refer to it later.

FEATURING...

Do you see any grumps here?  Neither did we.  Instead we found a 'Merry Band of Travelers' who joined together from across the USA to experience the wonders of Ireland: its land, its culture, its history, its people.

The Merry Band Cast:

Top: Casey, Mark & Becky (us)

Fourth Step: Richard, Paul, Pascal (guide)

Third Step: Marty, Frank, Barb, Shirley, Ken

Second Step: Cheryl, Becky, Sandy, Stephen, Mark (driver)

First Step: Randall, Frani, Wayne, Karen, Richard

Lowest level: Amy, Debbie, Philip, Edie, Claudia with the hawk.

COME ALONG

We've waited so long...through 2020.

2021 past us by too.

Two years reminding us that travel is a privilege.

But now our Irish experience is about to begin;

we are at the height of anticipation

and the butterflies are fluttering in the stomach.

We are packed, waiting and wondering.

We are ready.

Are you?

Join us as we savor those wonderful memories

and assemble the pieces our Ireland puzzle.

Get Your Irish On

LOVE MUSIC LIKE A LOCAL

Ireland has a long and rich music history passed from one generation to the next.  Their stories are told through their songs and the songs are taught in school.  This traditional music in Ireland is called "Trad." But even today new songs are written that fit into that Trad genre. We can't help but wonder, is there any other country with so many songs written about it?

The sharing of music continues long after school as a mainstay in the pubs.  Trad ranges from upbeat and funny to somber and thought provoking. It all touches your soul in some way because Trad is not just about the music, it's also about the welcoming atmosphere that surrounds it. It is such an important part of the Irish culture that we feel compelled to include Trad though-out this scrapbook.  When you see a YouTube link, you're invited to listen, linger and learn from the lyrics.

Of course, there are other styles of music in Ireland, everything from rock to classical.  Here, our focus is on music that gives insight into Ireland and helps complete the puzzle of cultural understanding.

A TRAVEL TIP: Listen to the local music! We listened before the trip, in the pubs and Pascal played local music during coach time. The music tells the story of Ireland!

There's really no age when you stop playing Irish music. Even if I retired from playing onstage, I'd still be singing in pubs.      — Shane MacGowan
