Who We Are

Mark and Becky Haegele.  That would be Hägele in German but we adopted Hagelini for this Italian trip!  Becky is the scrapbooker in this case.  2019 marked our last dependent child becoming independent.  So with three kids successfully raised and out of the house we decided a celebration was in order.  (That, plus no more college tuition payments.  Woo-hoo.)

Why Rick Steves

This is our second RS Tour and certainly not our last.  Our first RS experience was so positive we did not consider any other tours for this trip.

Here's why:

-Super helpful guides.

-Well balanced free and structured times

-A manageable sized group (24!)

-Comfortable bus

-Well planned stops

-Use of local hotels and restaurants

-Good activity level

-No roll call, just a quick buddy check before departures

Why We Chose Village Italy

You could put the word 'village' before just about anything and you would have our attention.  Although we live in a metro region, we are not city folk at heart.  Our preferred travel is off the beaten path and not-so-touristy locales.

Mark has been to Italy previously, but Italy has been on my bucket list for ages.  So Village + {fill in the blank} and we chose Italy!  And now that I've tasted Italy, I am certain we will be back soon.

Our Plans

We flew from Philadelphia by Aer Lingus with a one hour lay over in Dublin allowing an extra day before the tour began.  When we arrived in Venice Marco Polo we took the bus to Padua.  It is actually two buses which change in Venice so I think you could actually look into a little Venice excursion before taking the second leg to Padua.  In Padua we got on the local bus going in the wrong direction!  But tickets are still good so we just needed to hop off and pick up the next bus in the opposite direction.  We found our stop and walked to our hotel. We had 24 hours before meeting with the tour group.  We spent that time exploring the arcaded streets with a gelato. Dinner was pizzas and a liter of wine at Pago Pago...we may have been a little too excited about the wine.  Coincidentally or not, we were given the English menu before we said a word.  I guess our red hair,  blonde hair and the wearing of shorts announced that for us. (Watch for my tip about clothing.)

The next day we spent time in the Prato Della Valle people watching, looking in the shops, and having spritzes among the college students. Our luggage was safely stored at Hotel Fagiano where we met our guide, Tricia, along with Lisa, an apprentice guide, and our tour mates.

From here our experience picks up with the Padua page.  I tried not to be too wordy, just give you enough to taste the experience without overwhelming you.  Just a taste is all you'll need for wanting to make this your own trip.  Details are always handy at ricksteves.com

After the Tour

We learned from out first trip that a little over two weeks away was our saturation point, so as tempting as it was, we did not add stops to our trip after the tour ended. Your guide will leave you prepared for the next step of your journey.  For us, Tricia arranged for a cab to take us to the airport in Milan.  But our flight was not til 10pm so we did spend most of the day in Lake Orta. (Watch for my tip about scheduling with your guide.)

Our flight was the reverse of our arrival with the exception of a 16 hr stop over in Ireland.  We arrived just after midnight and stayed in a hotel close to the airport.  We had a little trouble locating where to find the shuttle bus to the hotel and we contemplated walking to the hotel.  But finally the shuttle was found and we arrived at the hotel for a good night's sleep and hearty breakfast the next morning. Then it was back to Philadelphia.

Some Tips for This Site

We ate a good number of gelatos...I tracked the number one person ate on each page.  Double it for both of us together. Can you guess what that total might be?  Not to worry, though, it is a Rick Steves tour...we'll burn those calories off.

If I have a little suggestion that might help you, it is marked with the wine bottle and glass.

The photos in color signify something we found especially delightful. A wow moment.  A spark of joy.

And just for fun I gave various awards from Best Sunrise, Best Sunset, Best Village Doors, Best Village Lighting, Village Charm Award,  Best People Watching.

You can access pages from the menu bar, turn pages with the button on the bottom of each page, or from the photo gallery on the Home page. Below are buttons for the Home page or Padua page.
